Write To Your Representatives--Today!
The future of the Constitution, and of the United States are at stake in the face of Donald Trump’s attempted coup. One easy step to take to oppose the overthrow of our government and to preserve the nation is to write to your congressman and senators. You can, and should, do it today. And get everyone else you know to do the same. People in Congress do pay attention to what voters say.
My congressman and senators are all Democrats; what you write should probably change depending on whether any of yours is a Republican or maybe independent. But even if all of your congressional representatives are hard-core Republicans, I urge you to write them as soon as possible. Email is available at House.gov and Senate.gov 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It should take only about 5 minutes for all of them.
Here’s what I wrote to my congressman; I included reference to impeaching Secretary of the Treasury, because impeachment is a function of the House:
Donald Trump is carrying out a coup to overthrow the Constitution? What are you doing to stop him?
One thing you should do is to file articles of impeachment against Scott Bessent, the Secretary of the Treasury. At the very least, he has violated 26 U.S.C. Sec. 6103, prohibiting the disclosure of taxpayer information except in certain limited circumstances. The Secretary has violated that statute by permitting a private organization at the service of Elon Musk complete access to Treasury payment and other data.
There is a national emergency right now. The future of the United States is at stake. I call upon you to stand up to preserve the nation.
My message to my senators was somewhat different:
Donald Trump is carrying out a coup to overthrow the Constitution. What are you doing to stop him? The effort has been multi-faceted and the volume of actions have obscured what is under way. I call on you to make every effort to do oppose what is happening, from making it plain that a coup is under way to using Senate procedures in every way possible to slow down actions by the Republican majority that refuses to rein in the President, and filing legislation to stop what is happening.
There is a national emergency right now. The very future of the United States is at stake. I call upon you to stand up and do everything possible to preserve the nation.
Feel free to copy and paste, although I make no claim to eloquence; let’s just say that these messages are not likely to make it into my Collected Letters. But please write something, and do it just as soon as you possibly can. Then get everyone you know to do likewise. Oh, and after that, look for other ways to help.
Thank you

Jon, I will follow your lead. Yesterday, I texted my State Assemblymember, Gregg Hart, and Congressman Salud Carbajal the following (I’m summarizing):
“Trump’s use of the military, specifically the US Army Corp of Engineers, to release California’s water reserves was an intentional attack on the State of California. Trump is using the military and water rights to create conflict while at the same time reducing California’s emergency water reserves. The State needs to file suit to prevent the federal release of emergency water supplies based on false grounds - to save LA from wildfires (that are already fully contained or extinguished)”
Congress-member let me know that Sen. Padilla is “leading the charge on this” while Assemblymember Hart promised to contact the State’s Attorney General.
This is the first use of the US military against the People. We are literally in a Cold Civil War.
Our congressional rep for eastern Wa got there on the back of farmers. I pointed out that these tariffs hurt farmers because 90% of potash for fertilizer comes from Canada. Asked why ag is being damaged and what is he doing about it. Included facts/stats. Plan on sending more.
